Mosul Housing Competition is a response to the housing issue in post-war Iraq. It is the first architectural design competition by The Rifaat Chadirji Prize 2017 which is part of The Tamayouz Excellence Awards Program.
​The Five Farming Bridges is a proposal to rebuild the 5 Mosul bridges that crossed the Tigris River which were destroyed to encircle ISIS. With a reference to the hanging gardens of Babylon, this proposal “offers a vision of a positive future to restore the self-confidence of war refugees” as described by Vincent Callebaut Architectures. The new bridges are to be inhabited and contain urban farms and agriculture for food production. The design proposes many passive systems for a sustainable future and improved quality of life for the tenants. The Judging Panel selected the Five Farming Bridges because “this proposal directed to two of Mosul’s most immediate needs: housing and the reconsideration of its bridges, and yet at the same time uses the historical precedent of an inhabited bridge and yet speaks to the future in its morphology and construction”.

​ASSESSMENT: A city to upcycle from its heart
 
The 5 Mosul bridges connecting the west and east districts across the Tigris River were destroyed to encircle ISIS. The concept is to rebuild them as inhabited bridges by building the new city over the old city. 

​ANSWER: Five affordable and adaptable housings bridges with replicable architecture
 
The self-sufficient 5 farming bridges will be 3D-printed using recycled debris transported by drones from war ruins and rubble to address the shortage of affordable housing, estimated at more than 53,000 dwelling units.
They will be covered with urban farms and agricultural fields to guarantee food autonomy and thermal inertia.
Incorporating wind chimneys for natural air cooling, cold ceilings using the thermal energy of the river, solar water heaters for hot water, hydrodynamic waterfalls and hundreds of photovoltaic pergolas producing electricity, each sustainable bridge will resemble an artificial mountain stacking thousands of standardized modules of 12.96m².

​IMPACT: Ten years to rebuild 2 million lives
 
At 400 kilometers north of Baghdad, the rebuilding of the 5 bridges in Mosul, such as the mythical hanging gardens of Babylon, offers a vision of a positive future to restore the self-confidence of war refugees
 
This pioneering 3D-printing could change the way to construct buildings - making the process faster and less costly - fighting poverty and feeding the Post-ISIS Mosul.

Narmeen Marji from the German Jordanian University won the fourth place at Tamayouz International Award 2017 for her work on “Park and Transportation Hub”, this project was supervised by Mohammed Kahled.  This is the second year in a row an entry from the German Jordanian University qualifies to the Top 10 of Tamayouz International Award.  

Judging Panel's comment:
A bold and transformative  proposal in Amman’s Al-Abdali downtown district with a view to overcoming the impact of social and economic inequalities and improve accessibility for the general public by  ‘stitching’ or ‘healing’ the imbalanced urban fabric. The project is well-conceived and based on a thorough and holistic analysis of the current urban conditions facing users.
Ambitious in its scale the jury thought the design might benefit from the demonstration of a phased implementation.
As a visionary proposal to reconnect neighborhoods and new urban transportation facilities, it is a powerful demonstration of how considered infrastructure can benefit the city.

​Project description:
The city of Amman suffers from a split in its urban fabric that is not only visible in the physical sense but is also emphasized on a social level. This scar has become apparent in recent years due to neo-liberal developments in the city of Amman, particularly in the area of Al-Abdali, and its effects are reflected in the city’s developments. To be able to stitch the urban fabric back together, the threading element must be an integral part of the daily lives of people. Something they rely on and can be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the city. The existing transportation system as well as the infrastructure in Amman is below par. The need for a place to connect, commute, and converse is not met. “The Link” rethinks the transportation terminals as platforms to reconnect the edges and transform the station into an integral part of city and public life, where the city can go to breathe, and where the notion of “The Public” is priority.

​The project consists of a park which is the main entrance of the project, it includes a playground, a sculpture park to encourage the locals to shape the identity of the place. The park leads to a courtyard that opens to an outdoor market which acts as a transition to the library and indoor market functions and commercial activities. The heart of the project is the transportation hub, which houses local and regional buses as well as a proposed BRT terminal, and it leads to the main outdoor plaza. The project is connected through the streets which are the main arteries, and also using bridges at higher levels that create lateral connections from two significant landmarks: Al-Sayegh Building, an important commercial building in the area, and al-Hussein staircase, which is an old public staircase leading from Jabal Al-Hussein to Al-Abdali. Transportation can enhance the quality of life when the needed facilities are provided. When it is people-oriented and accommodates a diverse array of people, it can help improve the community, create jobs, and shape the city’s identity as a whole. 

​The Project rethinks the transit station as a public space by transforming the layers that generate the urban fabric into three dimensional spaces and volumes that integrate the site with the surroundings and provide services, leisure areas and  various activities for users, bringing the public life into the site again. Transportation routes act as the connecting thread, stitching the urban fabric of the new Abdali developments with the old existing fabric through transportation. The Thickened ground becomes a whole strategy to change the traditional opposition of building versus landscape, managing to introduce activities and programs to areas which are currently underused. The idea is to expand the ground plane to more than one level in order to provide direct access to multiple functions increasing the overall value, open space usage and intensity of life at street level, while also being a connector and healing the scar in the urban fabric of Abdali.

​The Rifat Chadirji Prize is a thematic open international prize focuses on proposing designs responding to local challenges in Iraq.  This prize aims to introduce Iraq and its challenges to the world and invite them to submit their ideas and to establish an uncompromising open source of ideas tackling social issues in Iraq through design.​ The current situation in Mosul would overwhelm the capacity of the formal market to incorporate the masses of refugees arriving to the city. Direct imitations of Western models that were designed for another culture are creating an alien environment in Middle East communities. Another housing policy, that fits the distinctive situation is needed.

​The idea of the First Place Winning project by Anna Otlik from Poland is to let the refugees settle by their own in a very traditional way, and designing the house space by the inhabitants according to the various needs of different families (size, faith, culture). The process as an informal settlement has a progressive character and uses the leftovers and recycled materials. Of course, the proper help of the municipality and charities is needed at the beginning, their main role would be to deliver the networks, building materials and arrange helping centers which later would change its function into the necessary city and public services. The scheme of the construction is to start the helping centre in a free land or densify free spaces inside the city centre. Then the refugees arrive and start to build, deciding by their own about the filling of the walls, occupied place and functions inside the house.

​Judging Panel's comment:
The housing structure extend spontaneously in a sustainable, slow way and remains under constant evolution to provide a better future for the city of Mosul. It considers the situation at all the relevant scales and stages, from initial emergency housing to a full-fledged neighbourhood.
“Re-settlement” also presents the very balanced relationship between mass and voids, and voids which have different categories. The private voids that are private courtyards, and then the semi-public spines which lead to different dwellings or houses. Then there’s the public spine. there is a modesty to it that promises buildability, and yet at the same time it is attractive and will appeal to many different Mosulians, as a place to live. This proposal fits in very well with its context; it is not as though they are putting big tall buildings. It is a low rise dense building. It complements the fabric and the density of the city.

​Genocide is unsolicited and unscrupulous to the whole world. It’s been happening worldwide due to political, social, economic, religious, cultural and so many ins and outs. In order to prevent genocide, we must realize it’s devastation.
Bangladesh had her own brutal birth in 1971, on a number of immeasurable sacrifices of genocide and torture. Since torture was getting excruciating on the minorities of Khulna region, thousands of these locals collected what belongings they could and went to a village called Chuknagar, from where they were about to go towards the Indian border by boat. Here they lost all of their belongings, cash, and jewelry, their families got tattered and a minimum number of 8000-10000 people were killed from a gathering of about 1 lac eluding people by a small group of Pakistani Army within 3-4 hours. Upon the departure of the unit, the locals disposed of the bodies by throwing them into the river and the nearby ponds. As the death toll raised to 4,200 they just lost count. The bodies kept floating with the silts and people couldn’t use the river water or eat fishes for the next 6 months.

​According to numerous eyewitnesses and survivors, it’s the biggest genocide that happens in the liberation war of Bangladesh, 1971. Like more others, it is not even documented or acknowledged.
It’s been 46 years since then, and that unfurled paddy field, Bazar; losing it’s ‘Kheya-Ghat’, is still there with its broken temple. With the death of these witnesses, who can still tell the truth with their tear-stained eyes, the oral history is decaying day by day.

​Plotting all these historic footprints on a master plan, three historically intensive zones are proposed with three strategic programs: A Documentation and Research Institute with a memorial on the paddy field, a factual gallery on the bank of that Bazar and a contemplation shelter which is accessed by a boat ride across the river Bhadra. A guided tour, both with signage and narration, is also proposed marking a historical point of reference for the future which will link the past with the present and enable people to realize that hatred is not the solution stopping genocidal acts, they have the individual responsibilities for the peace to humanities.

​For the resiliency of the development, a phenomenological approach of keeping architecture humble and down to the context is taken in terms of materials and construction, which also keeps the senses close to the actual facts.

​Infrastructures are an intrinsically human and cultural phenomenon, which has occurred for millennia, to sustain civilizations of many scales and levels of technology. Global Energy Landscapes is an essay on the new capabilities and responsibilities of man-made logistics to intervene the planet's resources in the new century. It is an interdisciplinary study of the Environmental, Territorial, Economic and Social impact of the new infrastructures that pretend to enhance the resources of the planet; exploring the levels of appropriation of the world's great natural reserves or "global gardens", antagonistic to the growth and urban concentrations in globalized hyper dense cities.  Today, about 97% of the energy generated is from non-renewable sources, and although by the end of the century the population is expected to grow considerably, technological advances of recent times show a clear intention to harness world resources in a clean and efficient way. The sea represents 71% of the Planet surface and one of the greatest potential of energy generation, despite being one of the less studied fields. This is why "Global Energy Landscapes" takes as a model the development of tidal energy, in one of the highest tidal range coasts in the world, Rio Gallegos estuary, located in one of the greatest natural reserves, the Patagonia. 

The winning team discuss their project design and details as follows:
 ​''Our project proposes to understand the landscape as an operative platform of systems and networks that allow human existence, in the same way that happens with the infrastructures that give life to our cities. In the era of megalopolis, of the continuous consumption and industrial state, the infrastructures acquire a new degree of visibility and complexity; being responsible for connecting human and environmental spheres. It is through this understanding that we intend to transcend the appropriation of the current infrastructural typologies to develop a proposal that uses the LANDSCAPE AS OPERATIVE LAND. Consequently, the new water infrastructure is the result of multiple studies about natural logic of the estuary, including its natural reserves, ecology and vitality.
                Based on a local, regional and international study of Patagonia, we recognized ecological, topographic, migratory and natural orders. Hence, an isolated tidal lagoon is designed based on 4 categories: Environment, Water production, Energy and Tourism.
                From them, the user appropriates this water infrastructure, generating multiple tensions in permanent relationship with the landscape. The proposal responds to the need of a person, the development of a country and the health of the planet.
                As architects, our strongest strategy was to introduce MINIMAL components in a TERRITORIAL scale project, forming networks in order to achieve the domestication of these new infrastructures.
Based on our research, we defined a specific method to tackle projects that focuses on 21st century issues:
 
1 - Incorporating multiplicity of scales.
2 - Understanding natural biophysical processes.
3 - Relegating the place of man in himself, and position it within the ecosystem.
4 - Change the concept of occupation, by the one of symbiosis.
5 - Find in nature and its components, the order of architecture.
6 - Redefining standardization: the uniqueness of the infrastructure as a closed system, designed exclusively in efficiency and economy.''

​Tackling global challenges with contextualised solutions and local impact is very much a winning combination and the Tamayouz jury was impressed by the elegant manner in which the project author(s) seamlessly and convincingly merged both scales of thought and representation.
We are presented with a very thoughtful project which combines infrastructure, conservation and landscape in a combined effort to reshape the territory with a minimal but habitable intervention. Convincingly tackling issues of biodiversity and impacts on natural habitat will help in the realisation of a world-class project.

Function of the project: Rehabilitation of Erosion affected IDPs (Internally displaced population)
 
Project description:
The project intent is to come up with the design for a prototype of community housing for the disaster prone riverine island of Majuli, that would exhibit better disaster resilience with changing climatic conditions and would capacitate the ‘to be’ inhabitants to build or rebuild their habitats by themselves. 

Prototype Ark 
Modular plan:  Designed on a grid of 1.3 by 1.3 meters, the smallest house with area of 45 sq m can be incremented to 75 sq m at the maximum.  Buoyant:  According to load calculations for buoyancy, 1 sq m. of live + dead + weather loading needs to be counter balanced with 0.02 cc of air to float and hence 99 sq m of the ark base has been packed with 120 airtight barrels of 200 litres capacity each, to enable the ark house to rise up to a minimum of 1.5 metres during flood.  Local and recycled materials:  Bamboo, rattan (a strong creeper species) and sun grass for thatch are natural materials abundantly available on site which are clubbed with materials recycled such as plastic water barrels and G.I sheets and metal pins and dowels are sourced from the mainland for building the community. 

Cluster Ark 

​Radial configuration:  8 basic ark prototypes can be clubbed in radial pattern, forming a cluster.   One cluster, many purposes: By introducing an octagonal core structure to fill the void in the typical cluster, a housing cluster can be transformed into a hospital, school, etc  

Commune Ark 
​Linked network: 26 cluster arks, in an interlinked arrangement along 1 km stretch of the embankment, act as a floating road network during flood and house 102 displacee households, a school, a hospital and an off-grid energy generation core (Mechanical energy system powered by bullock and bicycle movement)  Reclaim and build policy: A typical cluster of 6 houses plus an octagonal core can be built free of cost as a pilot project from reclaimed bamboo poles (roughly 2000 nos.) as a result of 1 km stretch bamboo cutting to make  embankments wider as per government proposal.   Community Driven Reconstruction: Community empowerment is facilitated through bamboo farming, floating farming (composed of water hyacinth and dung rafts for food cultivation especially in waterlogged areas), building of buoyant base by the local boat makers, prefabrication of structural and infill elements and the end process of construction of one's own home.  

Judging Panel's comment:
The use of appropriate technology and design sophistication to address a pressing social need is the hallmark of this considered and elegant solution.
The inhabitants of Majuli, a large inhabited river island, known for its rich biodiversity, routinely face devastating floods; the project deploys traditional materials and building methods to achieve a readily accessible solution for the communities who are relocated in housing structures that are more capable of responding to extreme flood conditions. This is a profoundly intelligent and admirable design, with a high level of technical expertise, proposing easy-to-maintain bamboo structures.

Judging Panel’s Comment:
This project causes us to remember that verticality in the city is critical, the designers tried to break the verticality with a clustered approach, which reminds us of the old
cities. However, verticality must always be in tandem with horizontality. It is as if part of the city becomes an elevation. So the elevation looks like the plan. It is an organic project that has a high level of homogeneity evidence of which can be seen in its elevation.
However, the tunnels are questionable. The proposal for the tunnels underneath the city is interesting as a concept yet it would require much more investigation.

In 2017 The Rifat Chadirji Prize was established as part of the Tamayouz Excellence Award program of championing and celebrating the best of Iraqi architecture.

​​Tamayouz launched the Rifat Chadirji Prize as part of its program of championing and celebrating the best of architecture worldwide. The prize is named after Dr. Rifat Chadirji, the great Iraqi Architect whose influence and importance are far beyond built work.

This year’s competition theme is “Rebuilding the Liberated Areas: Mosul’s Housing” to introduce to theworld the scale of thecrisis facing communities in Iraq and to present innovative ideas and practical solutions that can be used as primary studies by the governmental organisations responsible for the reconstruction of the liberated areas.
The participation of 223 firms and individuals from 42 countries, all contributing ideas responding to the humanitarian crisis are heart-warming. This competition had the value of reflecting difficult and controversial situations but through a reasonably positive lens. Although the competition finished, our work starts now to urge the responsible organisation to speed up the reconstruction effort.
The winner selected by the judging panel will receive the Rifat Chadirji Prize trophy (designed by the Dia Al-Azzawi a pioneer of modern Arab art and one of the most prominent artists in the Middle East) at the Tamayouz Award Ceremony in Amman – Jordan, December 2017, where the first exhibition of the shortlisted project will be held.

We present this book as an opensource of ideas hoping it would one day contribute to ideas responding to humanitarian crises which we face on a daily basis and a reminder of our social and humanitarian responsibilities towards refugees and internally displaced.

​THE CHALLENGE
Mosul city suffers from a chronic housing shortage. The deficit in housing units in Nineveh is estimated to have reached 172,000 units in mid-2016, with a 53,000 units’ deficit in Mosul alone. The major contributing factors to this shortage can be defined as 1) the scarcity of tracts of land for new housing projects; 2) the failure to update the city’s 1973 master plan and create formal urban expansion zones for housing development (Un-Habitat, 2016).
Only three housing complexes were built in Al-Yarmuk, Al-Arabi, and Al-Karama neighbourhoods in the 1980s. The Al-Hadbaa project near Tal Al-Ruman is the only recent public residential project (although only partially completed).
New housing provision was limited to the private sector. The housing demands of poorer members of society were mainly met in the old city of Mosul where existing buildings became cramped with families living in shared accommodation (Un-Habitat, 2016).
After 2003, informal settlements became a housing solution and a lucrative business, causing additional pressure on public utility networks and services. Before the fall of Mosul, there were no national policies in place to regularise informal settlements.
An estimated 900,000 internally displaced returned / will be returning to their homes following the liberation of the city, many of those returnees will find nothing but complete desolation.
THE RESPONSE
Participants were asked to design a prototype for affordable housing for the post-Daesh Mosul, which can be easily replicated with the objective of increasing the capacity of housing in the city and providing a practical and inspiring solution for returnees.

​​If we consider a destroyed city as a deeply damaged skin, we might start to think in a different, more vital way of its treatment. To induce and catalyze self-recovery process of a suffering skin, a large scale performance is needed. When it limits to small area only, the spread may be to slow to work properly, or may not work at all. The very same thing seems to stand for a suffering city.

​The project of Mosul housing recovery is based on an even action in the whole city area and consists of multiple ‘injections’ to the urban housing tissue formed as partly-filled and partly-designed multifamily structures. Although every unit provides at the same time total minimum to live ‘ad hoc’ and a large space to arrange in various ways. The general idea – self-recovery process – is to stimulate people to fill or rearrange the basic spaces into individual, dense forms of local architecture. 

​Every housing unit is designed to create a shelter from unsafe surroundings by creating an inwards-faced structure with traditional courtyard. Basic structure is to be built of steel and reinforced concrete frame, but all the future inhabitants arrangements may consist of any locally available material such as used bricks, stones and generally – rubble.

​Due to water and power shortage, new buildings are aimed to provide water from wells placed in the courtyards and solar energy from panels placed on the roofs or, hopefully in the near future, panels to be printed and placed on windows.

Tamayouz Excellence Award is an international architecture award that aims to celebrate the achievments of young architects and designers world wide. It is judged by a renowned International Judging Panel. ​Dimitra Gkougkoudi and Elli Athanasiadou from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are winners and honorable mentions for their Choreographing Space graduation project, supervised by Maria Vogiatzaki.

'Architecture and Dance' are two creative fields with common interests around the concept of three dimensional space and movement. Parallelisms can be drawn between the two disciplines concerning matters of expressiveness, mechanical aesthetics of the human and structural body and gravity as a parameter of restriction. Moreover during the last years Architecture, supported by computational technologies, tends to redefine movements contribution to the design process as an effective parameter. In this context fruitful relationships can be drawn between the two creative practices. ​

​The final proposal is a space devoted to movement [kinesis]. A Kinesis Hall is a space derived from movement and aiming to embrace it as well. It is conceived as a stage where different typologies of performative space meet. At the core, the ‘open stage’ serves as the primary circulation of the building and as a multifunctional performative space that engages the audience to approach, experience and participate. The building also acts as a stage for the city. Passers-by become the spectators of the activity that takes place inside. Performance space typologies also comprise an outdoor amphitheater and a black-box. The program also includes dance rehearsal studios, a movement recording studio, co-working spaces, a mediatheque, a water-hall and a restaurant.

The project is situated in Peiraios Street in the city of Athens, a brownfield regionwhich is considered an under development cultural axis. The building opens uptowards Peiraios Str., connecting it through a passage with the neighboorhoods, thus revitalizing the character of the area.

A south orientation has been chosen in order to maximize heat gains during the winter, while the centrally located patio allows for cross ventilation as well as functions as a ventilation chimney.
The form has been approached structurally as a steel frame structure cladded with solid and perforated concrete panels to match the industrial character of the area.

Tamayouz International Award for architectural excellence aims to recognise the excellence in architectural design and education worldwide and showcase excellent architectural examples to promote and provoke architectural debate to share architectural experience and knowledge among young architects and academics.

In the first cycle of the international student's category , honorable mentions celebrated their success alongside winners.The Eighth place was awarded to Zaid Al-Kawaz from the Applied Science University in Amman for his Conservation and redevelopment of Jadid Hasan Basha Quarter graduation project, Zaid’s project was supervised by Mazen Al-Nabulsi.

Adid Hasan Basha is considered to be one of the most important historical quarters in Baghdad. its value goes back to the Abbasid era when it used to be part of the Tuesday Market Quarter, then it was the administrative centre in Ottoman Baghdad Vilayet, it used to includes most important departments of the government & high class residence & it of remained so through the modern Iraqi state until the 1950s . Now the quarter has managed to maintain its historic urban fabric but it lost the residential value. The area has some specialised markets like the famous book & stationary market (Al- Mutanabi market which is active every Friday where cultural centres open their doors to visitors from all over Baghdad ) & antiques market the area also contains carpentry workshops & small presses. 

The development consists two stages: 
The first stage (to deal with the quarter completely) The development plans will be determined be considering the land use, buildings heights & architectural intervention level & the concept strategies .  
Circulation: Development the vehicles & pedestrians movement ( including the development of the riverbank which is considered to be important in this field, without any harm to the archaeological layers . Religious side : reformulating & rebuilding the recently rebuilding & refurbishing religious buildings to make them regain their lost historical value & integrate them with the surrounding urban fabric. Cultural side: redevelopment the cultural centres & the rehabilitation of administrative buildings us cultural centres & museums such as turning the Jewish school into the Jewish archive museum, & the Qishleh Building into directorate of antiquities in addition to development of archaeological parks near the abbasid palace. residential side: rehabilitation of traditional houses, constructing of new independent housing units, mixed use buildings ,hotels & providing services like such as car parks, schools, etc. Commercial side: redevelopment specialised commercial markets by providing storages, shops, facilitating the movement of goods & ensuring the continuation of life in the market until midnight.                                                                        

​The second stage (a detailed description in two sites ) The first site aims to develop a residential area and preserve  the heritage buildings. the newly built residential units will have the same old style of the traditional buildings. But in line with contemporary needs, the second project aims to develop Al- Mutanabi Street (books & stationery specialist market in Baghdad). The development of the market targets the buildings rehabilitation of the old sites, restructuring and building new sites that suit historical value of the market in order to gain the maximum benefit and to ensure the continuation of activity for the longest time possible. The project aims to provide a sufficient number of shops and via setting up a new arcade market that runs parallel to Al-mutanabi street. planting Citrus Aurantium trees can provide good shading , especially if we consider their suitability to the weather in Iraq. Also as part of the development plan, to provide concrete cube for the purpose of displaying books & sitting, instead of the current ones ( Books are displayed on the floor) The project also aims to solve the problem of storage and transportation of goods by constructing specially designed storages. Storages are connected to the main market via isolated corridors .

In 2016, Tamayouz Excellence Award has grown from a local award to an internationally recognized award judged by a renowned International Judging Panel.The purpose of this architectural design award is to recognise the excellence in architectural design and education worldwide and showcase excellent architectural examples to promote and provoke architectural debate to share architectural experience and knowledge among young architects and academics.

Celebrating young architects; the international students category focuses on supporting talent and innovation. The Seventh place was awarded to three young architects, Balsam Ibrahim, Hakem Al-Habahbeh Odai Haddad from the University of Jordan for their graduation project Redefining Waste, supervised by Dr Wael AlAzhari.

The winners described their project saying: ''Our vision was to alter community’s perspective towards environmental, economic and social sustainable manners, creating self-responsible individuals that construct an environment friendly community, and raising awareness about renewable energy in general.''

​There has been a rise in the amount of waste being generated daily by each household all over the city; this project serves as an experimental prototype of an environmentally sustainable decentralized municipal solid waste management model in the city of Amman, Jordan.

The idea of the project evolved from the concept that man sprang from nature and should become whole again. Encouraging people to explore different methods of benefiting from trash, and educating people on different renewable energy resources; this project is dedicated to develop the community as well as the environment, also to raise people’s awareness about our mother nature, by providing hands-on upcycling workshop, urban farming, research and development facilities, organic market and a walk through tour in the material recovery facility.

Design objectives was firstly to establish an environmentally sustainable decentralized municipal solid waste management model, to support local economy by providing a renewable energy resource and material recovery revenues, to foster environmentally behavior in users, by changing their mind-set about trash and energy, to educate the public regarding the reuse of disposed materials and the renewable energy resources, also to establish a market that sells environmentally friendly products and introduce it as a social norm and a research canter on the matters of renewable energy resources and it’s different aspects, and finally providing work opportunities for local community and a public outing for the local community and context. 

​Design theory evolved from following the installation of our three dimensional set of activities which facilitate our vision, we aimed at creating a new architype within the typical rectilinear spaces that house our activities and defines our local built environment and urban fabric aiming at demonstrating that this typical space has the ability to house activities in a sustainable manner as same spatial form can have different qualities and establishing an iconic domestic/industrial image within the aggregation of this typical Jordanian spatial and urban form in the context of Ain Ghazal on a micro scale and in Jordan on a macro scale  to tempt and magnetize local and foreign community into exploring what is occurring within this new archi-type as the human being is usually attracted to dissimilarities within his usual context. Moreover; we implemented basic urban farming concepts as we want to emphasize the importance of having green infrastructure; that is, natural landscape assets, including green spaces and water systems. Green infrastructure includes trees, parks, water sensitive urban design and green roofs, walls and facades. There is a range of benefits that can potentially be provided by green roofs, walls and facades: Increased property value, Storm water management, improved thermal performance, Aesthetics, open space, urban food production & cleaning the air.

​Since its birth, "Breeding ground" project has been drawn in symbology and thoughts seeking for tradition and past. Is located in Galicia, one of the north Spanish regions  with greater identity, rich in natural landscapes, culture, gastronomy, history and society, which makes it unique and sensitive against the aggressive evolution and  disconnection of human roots. Those qualities are the ones that represent the soul of this project.
Major opportunity area appears at old city womb, a port free of industrial activity, full of metallic ruins. Main goals to achieve are: to preserve nature, reduce pollution, be more attractive to young people and reconnect citizens back with their traditions. These goals will be seen from the Big Scale, with a green ring modifying city spreading, Middle Scale, with new urbanization including leisure, work and productive activities, to Small Scale, focused on architecture. The building proposed is a cooking school. A permanent intention at designing the project has been trying to generate an attractive area for the population,  where social meetings occur.

​Galician's are good eater people, eating surrounded by their own people, and precisely the 'eating ritual' represent one of the best excuses to share social meetings. On one hand, cooking school generates employment and interest of young people, and around it emerge spaces of experimentation. On the other hand, it is helpful to reconnect with all the productive process to, in an educational and entertaining connection, the population be aware of the original value of the products and the value of the whole cycle: starting with the water to irrigate farms to the recovery of wastes. In conclusion, a rich and useful place, responsible, friendly, a place with animated forest, meigas, saltpetre, melancholy and long digestions surrounded by good company with flavour of exquisite cream of orujo and filloas.

​The school is divided into several buildings, called reactors, connected by a public path, each with a purpose: either productive, teaching kitchen, accommodation for cooks, rehabilitation of some gasometers and especially the places of socialization.

​Focused on "Continuous Blend Reactor", due to its greater social convergence, is a formal space generated from the influence of kitchens: "main kitchen" where students put into practice what they learned, the "kitchen with legs", with a service tasting, and "kitchen rental", which citizens can enjoy and share. It is one double-height space, simulating an artificial forest formed by masts reminiscent of important industrial and fishing port, where light bursts like you're under the treetops. In Galicia it rains a lot, and the whole environment of the building canalize, stores and reuses that water. Every three masts of the building there is a "dish" that collects and reuses water.  Below them, flexible in time and in shape, with the goal of being places where citizens feel like you spend the afternoon "special areas" appear.
In conclusion, a nice corner in contact with water, in a port returned to the old city, where to eat, meet people, relax and enjoy the local culture.  

Baghdad University Student's District, Social Fabric Iraq-Baghdad

In 1957 Walter Gropius adopted the historic image of Baghdad to design a modern academic campus. A structure that would foster multiple court yards and student lounges that were designed to cultivate conversations between assorted ethnicities and cultures. The master plan for Baghdad University is a master piece of university design, the functional spaces that represented the vision of Gropius were changed to be used for other purposes and rezoned to be used for other needs.

Baghdad University Student’s District (BUSD) is an attempt to resurrect Gropius inclusivity vision, as after 2003, multiple challenges elevated everyday life that would affect the student’s communications and social life. Hence, BUSD is envisioned to be a forum for dialogue, diversity, and civic engagement; a home for sustainable reflections, moral and humane replenishment, inclusiveness, progression and performance.

​The vision of BUSD, is to synergize between current different secluded gathering points that are used by the students. The synergy is implemented by the planned design of the urban pathways that will work as attraction conjoin the students into these areas and link them to several centralized engagement and leisure centres where all students will reside and communicate with each other.
BUSD conceptual design is made of a central area, leisure centre, extension library and four main boxes presenting itself as a modern landmark structures which would blend and standout in visual flow of buildings. These boxes are a collection of student’s centres and activities areas, drawing the attention of students both inside and outside the core. Around the core are different types of activities that create a vibrant modern living environment, within these areas lays the central library area that will work as a welcoming extension to the second box.

The second box is the students studying area that is a natural link between study zones and the library. These areas will motivate students and provide a healthy social and academic environment which helps the students reconnect with each other and enhance the education and relationships between them as one inclusive entity and that has no racial beliefs. In addition to the third box which is an elevated movie theater and other conference/meeting halls.

The fourth box which also intersects with central area is the art spaces, students will be able to present their works, design their own acts and display it in international standard theater and gallery.

The main student union building which intersect with fourth box will host the students clubs. The masses is elevated to create a visual axis as well the ground floor is to create outdoor public spaces with different characters and opportunities for student’s public use and outdoor amphitheater for art performance and activates.

The leisure mass that intersect with the students clubs (central area) will create a nice environment and entertainment spaces,  gym, game spaces and other facilities.  Sinking plaza is a Main student gathering space in the middle of the university not exceeding 20 minutes, which will host the main leisure area, housing student and food courts, gives an opportunity to have a nice outdoor space for gathering and social community spaces that forms a penetration of river’s atmosphere.

BUSD used parametric vertical louvers that rotates around the axis according to the solar direction and create a suitable comfort temperature. Foot print: 26,000 sq, Total area: 61,178 sq.

Tamayouz International Award for architectural excellence is an annual international award open to architecture students worldwide.  Tamayouz International aims to recognise and reward excellence in architectural design and education by celebrating the achievements of young architects at an early stage and giving them the opportunity to collaborate and support each other, empowering a generation of young architects to pursue their careers knowing that they can contribute towards the advancement of architecture in their communities.

​In the 2016 Cycle ,the Fourth Place was awarded to Horia Mihai-Coman from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca Romania for his project; Music Academy Campus in Cluj - Napoca.  This project was supervised by Dr Arh Radu Șerban Spânu.

Describing his project; Horia Mihai-Coman says: ''​I’ve started to compose my sheet of music using the sites characteristics through its language in its natural setting; the land became my orchestra and I, its composer.
From the street, I started with a Wind fang alveolar withdrawal, which opens the doors towards the Urban Foyer assembly. Due to topography, the land extends through a series of steps and ramps on several levels, which act as platforms for each institution. 
From the main Foyer, which crosses through the entire ensemble like a red carpet, one is led to the intimate area of the site where one is completely surrounded by a series of sinuous stairs clothed in green grass, which outlines the amphitheatre stage in a fluid manner, and gets lost in the Colina Hills scenery, which itself becomes an outdoor concert hall.''

Horia describes his choice of the project concept : ''​I chose Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s quote “I call architecture frozen music.” to define my construction, I’ve chosen to let it through each assembly gap and pick it up in its virtue. The perfection of frozen water, these fine structures but powerful gestures are represented by a Voronoi pattern. I chose music to organize the DNA of this structure; I chose to strengthen its vibrancy, leaving the building, all through the mind and technology, to stand up by itself. I tried to go beyond what is tactile, to span the environment with meaning and value, in a perfect symbiosis. Thus music, topography, shape and structure are affined with frozen water in an impenetrable connection; nothing can be excluded, but only explored, man becomes a participant of the creative act, and I’ve molded material just like music reverberates water.''

​The Project is about finding a “Gandhian” way in architecture and using that approach to design a post-riot rehabilitation for a community displaced by the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
​
Thesis precinct
Communal riots wrack Muzaffarnagar in September, leaving the people scarred and homeless. This is the single largest incident of violence in Uttar Pradesh since Indian Independence affected almost fifty thousand people across nine villages.  Overnight, people were forced to flee the homes they had been inhabiting for generations. This project is targeted at a community of100 such displaced families in kandhla village of Muzaffarnagar District, Uttar Pradesh. The total site area is 3.7ha. It includes one existing Madrasa and two ponds. 
I lived on site for four months. Through community discussion and research, I realised that rehabilitation is not just building houses. A detailed emphasis has to be given on the lifestyle, social structure and economy of the community. This displacement is looked upon as an opportunity

Nipun Prabhakar from the school of planning and architecture, BHOPAL - India is the Third Prize winner of Tamayouz International Award for Architectural Excellence for his work on the Post-Riot Rehabilitation project. Nipun’s graduation project was supervised by Dr Saurabh Popli.

The Award Judging Panel said that this project shows an important role for architects because it translates the local community needs with strategies routed in the community and the realities of the site, addressing social needs in a sensitive and appropriate manner and takes very strongly the local vernacular.

​Salient points of the thesis project are: 
1. Identification of the Gandhian framework of values and their architectural manifestations as the guidelines for design. 
2. Each dwelling unit is different. For the scope of this dissertation seven incremental housing units were designed with the participation of the families with inputs of women, men and children. Each of the family was studied and design came out of their needs and aspirations.   
3. These units combined together form a demonstration cluster. Each cluster is also guided by a design framework which includes provision of multiple exit points, fixed width for emergency vehicles and development controls which maintains the future growth. 21 Such clusters, each one developed according to the users but regulated by a accommodating design framework. 
4. Social integration through Settlement planning using public participation as a main tool. Detailed site plan was developed keeping the physical site conditions and the traditional settlement patterns in mind.  

RURAL INNOVATION CENTER
To promote inter-community cohesion of the Muslim community living on site and the Hindu community living in the vicinity, infrastructure of knowledge is provided with an intension of eliminating differences through knowledge. That is provided by a Rural Innovation Center which includes building technology workshops, wood workshop and jiggery making workshop. Local materials are combined with the local artisanship is used following the Gandhian idea of Self-Reliance. 

​Space for decisions
To promote the intra community cohesion a community centre was provided. Along with that an open public space between the Madrasa and the community centre is designed where panchayats (meetings of the five elected heads of the village) and meetings can be held and decisions can be taken. This space is designed with an intension of using religion and the community as a tool for governance. That is why the space for community meetings is built between the Madrasa/Mosque and the community center on an elevated plinth symbolising that good governance can be achieved through the combination of religion and the community.

​The project tackles problems on an urban scale targeting urban blights in underdeveloped areas of the city of Amman in Jordan. These areas are mainly located in East Amman suffering from different problems; three sample areas were taken as example:
​
Marka (Extreme pollution), Al Natheef (Overcrowded and unorganized), Al Balad  (Identity crisis).
​
Lama and Tamara describe their approach to solve these problems is by inserting a familiar program from the area itself capitalizing the local resources healing it from within. This method is referred to as Urban Acupuncture a theory where the city is regarded as the human body. The physical structures that exist in a city regarded as organs in Chinese traditional medicine system, while the activity and movement of people in the city regarded as Qi, energy that flow in the body. The main purpose is maintaining energy flows in the body (city) so it can work properly.

​To come up with the optimum program for all these areas we studied all the economic, social and environmental problems and created a matrix where intersecting problems are addressed by a common program forming the main core; a Prototype Urban Plug-in that remains the same and supporting functions are added according to each area’s specifications, these functions differ and are configured differently around the core hence the modular approach.

​The pilot site for the project was in Marka:
The area suffers from pollution caused by the factories and waste of workshops sprawling the residential area. Without any intervention, living conditions in the area will continue to get worse. The industrial sprawl will continue causing a clash between these two areas.   

​On the long term, an abandonment of the residential areas will occur because of the area’s toxic nature and after the life cycle of the industrial projects end the area will become totally deserted.   
​
Through acupuncture we apply a systematic growth for both forces. Managing the future consequences. The area’s inevitable clash will be replaced with a symbiotic zone where two forces can coexist.    
 
The building is self-sufficient and environmentally independent guaranteeing future growth with an expandable structure.    
 
The post industrial post capitalist approach offers a balance between the production and leisure aspects creating a neutral zone. 

​The goal is to harness the local environmental resources and use it to transform the construction waste into something of economic value that can benefit the public and cause social empowerment while being environmentally friendly and self sufficient.
The core in Marka serves as an energy provider and environment controller supporting the recycling workshops and public facilities that are linearly configured around it in a pinwheel design linked by the logic of Russian constructivism and construction joints.

Project Description:
​
​Going back to “Square One” means going back to the beginning after a dead-end or a failure. The educational system in Amman has been a failed project of rehabilitation as it is based on destructive values that poison the society and devalue the learning experience. This project aims to redefine the role of a 21st century public library as an urban space and tackle this problem through providing the spaces and functions needed to instill values that could be the starting point of a complete educational reform.

​The project is located in a very vibrant area of downtown Amman, in Ras Al-Ain, right between vibrant edges including Jabal Al-Natheef, Al-Misdar, as well as Saqf Al-Seil which is the main downtown market, the area is packed with cultural and social influences, as well as historical significance. The many challenges that were tackled in the site include a steep 35 meter slope, high contrast between adjacent edges, social segregation as well as traditional community values and the need for better educational institutions in the area, as the existing ones were in a below-average condition.

The program houses three main functions; An interactive digital library that serves the cultural street edge, a traditional library that serves the school’s educational edge, and a learning center that serves the upper residential edge which is in dire need of educational support as well as social integration. The functions are all housed within the exterior shell which consists of large plazas, indoor courtyards, and public staircases; emerging from the notion that the original Ammani public spaces, the very first building block of the city, are its many staircases.

​Not only are the stairs considered to be the original Ammani public spaces, they are also the main connection between the upper and lower edges of the hilly downtown terrain. The project serves as a mediator between the edges, connecting them all together in one point despite their contrasting qualities by providing public plazas and spaces for meeting and gathering, as well as bringing the indoors outdoors through activities such as book fairs, sports, and outdoor classrooms. It creates a common ground and initiates dialogue between the edges, which can in turn become a positive starting point for change and reform.
 

Instead of the current educational system that is based on enforcing, memorizing, and destructive values, the project aims to encourage people to want to learn and explore through an interactive experience that would reshape the entire system and at the same time empower the youth and enrich this area, adding value to the existing cultural context.

​“SQUARE ONE” is an experience that reimagines the educational process and invokes change in the existing system through a progression of spaces, levels, and activities that challenge societal norms and aim to integrate the surrounding society by redefining the role of the library of the 21st century not as a collection of books, but as a collection of people, communities, and experiences.

​In order to organize such efficient system in the perpetual motion age, a totally different, inside-out infrastructure must be built. Ubiquitous transportation system acts as city’s “blood vessels”, and port here is a “heart”, an entrance to the city, travellers’ navigation sign. Port of the future is an augmented, hybrid, condensed hub. It is the most flexible and powerful element in an urban structure.

Kazan railway station occupies a unique position in the city. It is adjacent to the Volga river embankment as well as to the forest park line; however, the citizens’ access to both of them is totally blocked with the supplementary railways, while natural zones themselves lack any care. On the other hand, there are visual and pedestrian connections with the key centre objects (Kremlin, Central Stadium, Bulak channel). They are also discontinued with unfriendly and abandoned quarters of New Tatar Sloboda. Without introduction of fundamentally different concept, it is not possible to unlock the full potential of this territory.

​Design proposes to create a hybrid park which would connect the historical site of the New Tatar Sloboda and green “wedge”. There are instant hotels, repair and parking stations, cargo base, waste recycling plant, trade and recreational spaces dissolved in this park and supplementing each other in a digitally optimized way. Key points in the park are marked with three infrastructural towers: Waste recycling tower, Parking & repairing tower and Cargo tower. Towers’ structural principle is based on tulip, daffodil and lilac flowers respectively, which are the most common plants in local area. Functional and symbolic saturation becomes adequate to its status of the central crossroad.

​Existing railway is substituted with significantly faster and more durable hyper loop line. Hybrid forest landscape also provides a joint with the river port and pocket airport, platforms and parking areas of which are docked on the top. Subway, ground public transport and drone highways connect the hub to the whole Kazan.

​ “Hybridity” in the project is appearing in the communication between bio-social fabric, artificial framework and informational field; between static and moving; between virtual and real. Design celebrates hygiene of diversity instead of sterility. The main aim of the project is to reunion nature and city; recreate the diverse and sustainable ecosystem in a complex urban landscape.

​​Site selection criteria
 
The western buffer zone of Mujib reserve was selected as the area of study. Human access to the reserve, the end-flow of water, water harvesting, treatment and pumping, eco-tourism, all happen in this part of the reserve.
 

Current movement patterns
 
The construction of the dead-sea highway on the edge of the western boundary of Mujib reserve, allowed people to reach the area by driving between north and south, and entering the reserve starting an unofficial eco-tourism in the wadi’s in the late 90’s, therefore the RSCN decided to organize these activities and confine them in certain canyoning and hiking trails. A visitors’ center was built and recently renovated and expanded adjacent to the entrance of Siq al Mujib where all canyoning trails start, while the end point of most of the trails is 1.5 km far from the starting point -to the south.

On their way back to the starting point, eco-tourists have to walk on the side of the highway to reach the visitor’s center, and if they are staying for an overnight in the Mujib chalets which were built along the coast in 2008, they should cross the highway and walk the sloped terrain down, interrupted by the wired pumping station.

​Focus area
 
The existing interventions in the area had rational reasons to exist each in where it is currently placed, but not necessarily in the present way of implementation. Dependently, the project’s area and quality was determined.
The located infra-structural and architectural interventions generated from certain human-needs linked with the area, either related to transportation (dead-sea highway and bridge), water (Mujib levee and water pumping system), or eco-tourism (visitors’ center and chalets), however the network connecting these interventions was not planned in a comprehensive manner, which made it hard and unsafe to move from one point to another. The approach in this project relies on the traces of these existing structures without expanding the footprint on site, while preserving and encouraging human movement in it.

2016 Third Place Winner – Ali Nashwan

The Third Prize goes to Ali Nashwan from Mosul University (in Kirkuk) for his project; Nano Technology Research Centre.  Ali’s graduation project was supervised by Professor Ali Haider Al-Jameel.  Ali is the only Iraqi student who made it to both shortlists; Tamayouz International (Top 20) and Tamayouz Iraq (3rd Prize) with two different projects, A remarkable achievement coming all the way form Mosul University in such a difficult time.

The Judging Panel Commented on The selection of project function and the site in proximity to a university and described it to be well set up, the project shows good design development and the designer masterfully sets up an appropriate setting for the habitable blocks. The use of geometry is beguiling and sets up a lovely urban condition.

Ali Nashwan describes his project as a Celebration of the process of nanotechnologies.
Nanoscience was discovered through special types of microscopes One of the most important devices that helped the discovery and development of Nanoscience is the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)

​Atomic force microscope components and uses
The device consists of a needle (Tip) passing over the surface to be scanned, the needle is installed on horizontal holder (Cantiliever) so that the needle is perpendicular to that holder and perpendicular to the surface at the same time, the holder is rising and falling with rising and falling of the needle according to the terrain in the surface, where the needle read the coordinates of the points of the surface to be scanned and give them to the computer to form a three-dimensional surface and zoom it in millions of times. When the needle is approaching from the sample surface, a force  between the needle head and the surface of the sample is generated and this leads to a deviation of arm and read the surface.

The resulting forms after the scanning process is a 3D spherical forms and often vaulted surfaces similar to the moon.

Generation of Design idea generated according to previous data:

The basis of the design idea is the (AFM), there will be a contact between the (AFM) device and the surface of the sample, Where the Earth's surface is the surface of the sample and the blocks above the ground is the scanning device (tip, cantilever).
​
In order to simulate the forms of scanned surfaces and get similar forms on the ground surface of the project, Laboratories placed underground to get the topography of the earth surface by natural skylight as shaped domes, and making a big hole with a circular shape for getting topography where there's a tip descends in the middle of the hole., And an outside laboratories and seating areas in the form of domes have been made. The building is consists of three cones each cone represents the  (tip) on the surface of the sample in a particular position.

The building also consists of three rectangles each rectangle reflects the case of the device during its movement over the surface, The self-similarity strategy has been used in the formation of the project, which meets in the context of the scale nanoscale. Which cannot be seen only through microscopes on the one hand and pictures of the universe scale of space on the other hand, which can only be seen through a telescope, where the surfaces of nanoparticles is similar to the surfaces of the space and the moon.

The same material has been used to cover inside and outside parts of the building, by using nanotechnology to process the surface of the material to become suitable for ​exterior and interior use. ​Also the function side were taken big space from the design. And I used the type of lab building.

2016 Second Place Winner – Sattar Flaih
Function of the project: AN INTERACTION CENTER PROJECT 
HILLAH, BABYLON, IRAQ.
 
Sattar Flaih from Babylon University is the winner of ​The Second Prize of Tamayouz Award- Iraqi Category for his work on the Interaction Center Project; Sattar’s work was supervised by Dr Hassan Al-Guesbi.  Sattar is the first student from Babylon University to make it to the Tamayouz Top 10 of the Tamayouz Iraq Award.

The Judging Panel described the project as a balanced project in all, and commended the skilfully executed form that integrates well with the river and its own site and very well presented.

Sattar Flaih, Describes his project to be a vital multi use project of social, scientific and environmental interactions. Which provide a real new chance to change the every-day life routine. Sense-experience subjectivity can be controlled and guided to desired common-sense effects. New materials, tools and technologies are experienced here in different interaction spaces. One can relate to others physically and sensually by virtual reality techniques and advanced smart applications.

​LOCATION:
The project is located at the east bank of "Shat Al-Hillah", a branch of Euphrates river, which extend north of about (5) km reaching the remains of the famous city of Ancient Babylon. Also, the river streams down across the city of Hillah with a remarkable cornice.

​The site itself, of about (105,000) m2, can tell more stories of different historical, cultural and religious events. It stands in the midway between the history of Ancient Babylon and the heritage of the city of Hillah, while immortal flowing river is still holding and sharing memories within time.

​THE CONCEPT:
            In Post-Modernism, human beings had been returned to be the center and part of everything around again. This paradigm shifted the view to the nature and the whole world in both macro and micro levels. Advanced developments in communications and high technologies enabled us to see and conceive things differently.

​It is supposed to be that sustained patterns and systems reveals themselves when their inner self-organized structures can match the structures of their neighbours locally and globally. Humans well-structured minds are designed to interact with natural forms accordingly. Organic forms imply continuous piecemeal changes in their morphologies.

Instead of capturing change, it is possible to manage it dynamically. Secrets of life can be revealed somehow by tuning nature with geometry. The story of this project begins with the flower of life, The Chamomile Babylonian Flower, embodied amazingly in the laws of sacred geometry of Ancient Babylon. Organic architecture is manifested clearly by using organic forms which are related deeply with the iconic form of Chamomile in a significant way that tuning the site. With canonical rules  and folding architecture, the whole can be merged altogether in a wonderful way to re-present life.
​
Also, organic architecture is manifested clearly here by using organic forms. In the other hand, inner activities and functions are related to the bio-electronic and digital environment trying to create virtual common realms beyond the constrains of possible. One can live, feel and enjoy his interaction with others and with the smart environment around him. Inner plan subdivisions and elevations details show a scaling Golden Ratio of (1:1.6) at each level of magnification. This multi layers sequence is manifested clearly in Chamomile Babylonian Flower of Life.

GOALS:
In theory: It is an attempt to improve that limitless imagination always need scientific applications to be verified.
In practice: It provides a mean to judge history, live the present and predict the future.

2016 First Prize Winner –Ahmed Khaled AL-Mashhadani
Function of the project: Babylon 4000 - Panorama Museum
 
The Winner of the 2016 Tamayouz Iraq Award and the First Prize is Ahmed Bader from Al-Nahrain University for his project; Babylon 4000 – Panorama Museum, supervised by Dr Saba Sami.  Ahmed is the first student from Al-Nahrain University to reach the Top 3 of Tamayouz Iraq Award.
The Judging Panel’s stated that they chose this project because it proposes a brave new way of visual interaction with Babylon and is commended for its imaginative engagement with the city, the successful design process lead to proper setting of the building on site.  The concept of introducing usable areas around a court yard reflecting local identity is a successful design process approach, distribution of spaces and circulation is well addressed.

​Ahmed Badr, Describes his project, 4000 panorama museum,  as a cultural institution with civilizations that have appeared on this earth 4,000 years old, and for all historical periods beginning from the ancient Babylonian era and until the twentieth century. 
 
The building is a story telling masterpiece that lists the culture using various methods of electronic display and virtual reality which contains models of the Iraqi ancient civilizations. 
 
The project also focuses on the historical, cultural and architectural aspects of the city of Babylon, through the study of architecture and urban fabric of social and cultural life .

When you have a history of 4000 years old, and civilization is considered one of greatest and a stronger civilizations that appeared on earth, there must be a museum that show this civilization to the world. 

​CONCEPT :

More than 4000 years of ancient Babylon history and achievement can be illustrated chronology through this museum .
The concept is inspired by the Babylon ziggurat which represented symbol of this civilization it's the connection between us  and old babylon which it represented the past of us and the future of them . 

The museum has a metaphor of this ziggurat but with the presence look of future of past  .

The future of the past has two effected axis:

1- The process of return to the past of ziggurat ( physical rebuild & return effect )  
2- The process of rechanging the future of ziggurat ( Time effect & Redesign ) .

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT :

Cultural objective: To raise the general level of cultural awareness of the visitors and the statement of the importance of knowing civilization that took place on this earth 
Scientific goal: To find out the history of the city of Babylon and offer educational courses to learn it 
Historic goal: So as to achieve communication between the past and present through the revival of historic areas.
